Information
Good Morning,

I am requesting an interpretation on Part 1, Section 2 (3) of the Freedom of Information Act 2026. This states that all freedom of information requests shall be answered within seven (7) days from the time of submission.

Would the Supreme Court be able to review this and determine what constitutes 7 days - is this 196 hours (7 days x 24 hours) have elapsed since the time of submission or shall it be considered that on the commencement of the seventh day, the window for reply has expired or would the court determine a different interpretation?

Court Opinion
Written by Pawtistic 5th October 2026, 12:08 PM UTC
MAJORITY OPINION.— The Court interprets Part 1, Section 2(3) of the Freedom of Information Act 2026 to mean that freedom of information requests must be answered within seven (7) full days, or 168 hours, from the time they are submitted. The deadline is the same time seven days later, not the start of the seventh day.

WHEREFORE.— The Court holds that a response must be provided within 168 hours of submission. For example, a request submitted on 4 October 2026 at 8:40 pm UTC must be answered by 11 October 2026 at 8:40 pm UTC. Any response after that deadline falls outside the required period.

SO ORDERED.— Associate Justice Pawtistic delivered the Court’s opinion, joined by Deputy Chief Justice Kelpti, Senior Associate Justice Inconclusive-, Associate Justice .Martin., AND Associate Justice Brokyy_.

Chief Justice dreckly recused himself.
